About Us

Midcoast Green Collaborative is a 501(C)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to community building. We are a group of business persons, public officials and other citizens from the Damariscotta area who have joined together to promote a viable "green" program of socially responsible economic growth in Midcoast Maine that will help answer the need for new, well paying jobs in a revitalized, balanced economy built on the production of goods, rather than just services, retail sales, and tourism.

We see in the challenge posed by rapidly growing, world-wide energy shortages and a global environment increasingly imperiled by the burning of oil an historic opportunity to build a sustainable society and a latent market for sustainable products and services.

We seek to build awareness of this impending crisis among the local population and acquaint people with the many ways in which thousands of communities in this country and around the world have begun to actively and successfully deal with it.

We seek to encourage the creation of locally owned businesses that keep their earnings in the local economy and provide well-paying, local jobs that can't be outsourced..

We seek to assist the formation of a local renewable energy industry and become the renewable energy center of an energy-self-sufficient Midcoast Maine.

We believe the best way to accomplish the above goals is similar to the way a typical New England town like Damariscotta itself has evolved: beginning with a local business settling on the riverbank, followed by a community of businesses and residences growing up around it.

There is much to be done but we do not have to reinvent the wheel. Fortunately, there are a number of successful models to follow, both in the U.S. and abroad. Maine has the requisite energy resources. The technology is available, and the market for energy efficiency and renewable energy products is ours to develop.
